« PASSAGE ANALYSIS Introduction: Hello everyone, today I will present you my passage analysis of Lord of the flies, written by William Golding and first published in 1954.

My passage starts on page 51 on the bottom of the page with “There wasn’t any smoke.

Only flames.” and ends on page 55 in the end of the first paragraph.

There should be 105 lines. Situation: Firstly, I’ll situate the passage (chapter 2).

Boys island, meeting Ralph and Piggy, conch, chief, exploring the island – conclusion.

Assembly island, rules, beast, fire, go to make the fire.

The fire dies. Summary: Piggy complains about the fire, gets interrupted, Ralph gets order again, Jack wants rules and offer his and the hunters’ help to keep the fire going.

Roger not hope, Ralph opposed, Piggy mad.

Try to light the fire again, burn half the island. Thesis statement The ineffectiveness of keeping the fire burning and of the new rules and the boys’ lack of maturity foreshadow savagery and disorder in the group (that we can see in the end). Themes: Lack of maturity: 1) Even if there is a mature initiative, they do it in a childish way.

We can see that there is an asymmetry between what they say and what they do. Shows the lack of maturity.

More for the fun and for the excitement. Don’t discuss how they are going to make the fire (Maurice l.15-16). Rush, lack of organization (symbol: let’s make a fire, it’ll be fun, not allowed (Lack 55-57)).

Even from the beginning, lack of organization, they are children trying to act like grownups.

Beyond their abilities of doing and of thinking.

Maturity not achieved.

Acknowledge it is for the rescue but when they do it, it is for the fun and game.

Thinking is rational.

(52-53) 2) Don’t listen to each other, interrupts. 3) Language (doesn’t count 12, you shut up .19) 4) They let the fire burn half the island.

7:30/8:39/745 Premature disrespect of the rules: 26.

we ought to have more rules.

Conch is ineffective “I got the conch” 10/14/17 Characters:. »
