« INTRO Many authors , throughout artworks such as The Genetic Code written by Isaac ASIMOV or Gattaca, produced by Andrew NICOLL have contributed to democratizing genetics in our society.

This corpus of documents deals with human breakthroughs from different points of view: scientific, ethical but also artistic.

Eugenics nowadays takes a real part in our society.

Eugenics is the idea that it is possible to improve humans by allowing only some people to produce children.

These new ways of doing science invite us to push the limits even further.

Nevertheless, we should not be diverted concerning the ethical point of view.

Indeed, it raises the following question : to what extent does human improvement benefit mankind ? To answer this issue, first of all, we will see that eugenics has been depicted in a novel before becoming real experiments.

Secondly, we will demonstrate that in relation to lawful restrictions, a new way to make science appear.

Finally, should scientific progress have boundaries ? Can we create what we want without caring about consequences ? DÉVELOPPEMENT In the first part, eugenics has been depicted in a novel before becoming real experiments. Document one is the front cover of Brave New World, a novel written by Aldous HUXLEY where eugenics is omnipotent, it is an undeniable fact.

We are in the year 2540, the country is governed by this system.

Since then, humans believe in a "perfect human being".

The novel depicts a futuristic society, called the World State, that revolves around science and efficiency. Children are created outside the womb and cloned in order to increase the population.

The reader is then introduced to the class system of this world, where citizens are sorted as embryos to be of a certain class.

The embryos, which exist within tubes and incubators, are provided with differing amounts of chemicals and hormones in order to condition them into predetermined classes.

Embryos destined for the higher classes get chemicals to perfect them both physically and mentally, whereas those of the lower classes are altered to be imperfect in those respects.

These classes, in order from highest to lowest, are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon.

The Alphas are engendered to be leaders, and the Epsilons are bred to be unskilled workers. 1 Now, we will deal with lawful restrictions and how the scientific community faces it in creating a new way to make science appear. 1 Huxley picked up on such optimism and created the dystopian world of his novel so as to criticize it.

Much of the anxiety that drives Brave New World can be traced to a widespread belief in technology as a futuristic remedy for problems caused by disease and war.. »
