« For the love of God, Damien Hirst Liliana Gugnon terminale 5 Damien Steven Hirst is a British artist, born June 7, 1965 in Bristol.

He lives and works in London.

He dominated the British art scene in the 1990s as a member of the Young British Artists. For the Love of God is a sculpture by artist Damien Hirst created in 2007, for a total value of $ 100 million.

It is a replica of a real human skull, and more precisely the skull of a 35-year-old man who lived in the 18th century, but the dentition is authentic although it is not that of that man.

It is covered with platinum and encrusted over its entire surface with 8,601 diamonds in all, 1,106.18 carats. It can be viewed under strict conditions at the White Cube in London.

The work is the subject of many debates and controversies, just as much as the artist.

Damien got the idea for the name when his mother once told him « for the love of god, what are you going to do now ? » In fact, death is one of the central themes in the work of Damien Hirst. This piece, admirable as well as obscene, is only the culmination of a work accompanied, and even carried by controversy.

The work sold for $ 100 million in August 2007, making Damien Hirst the most expensive living artist in the world.

This cast of a human skull was sold to a group of investors, who requested anonymity Hirst already held the record for the most expensive work by a living artist to be auctioned: Lullaby Spring - a 10-foot-tall metal medicine cabinet filled with 6,136 painted tablets, was sold on June 22 in London by auction house Sotheby's for $ 19.2 million.. »
