For them this Slav country could not call itself by this name and therefore was not to be recognised.

Thus Macedonia was admitted to the United Nations in 1993 under the provisional name of "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". Threatened with economic suffocation by a partial blockade by the Greeks and Serbians, Macedonia obtains its supplies from Bulgaria and Albania by difficult routes.

But Greece finally signed an agreement with Macedonia in 1995.

The country has been a member of the Council of Europe since the end of the same year. The Albanian minority makes up more than 20% of the population, and forms part of the government majority, despite recurring tensions.. »
