« Today, I will talk about Katherine Johnson, a brilliant mathematician who worked for NASA, and how her work changed the perception of African-American women in the fields of science and mathematics. I chose this topic because I admire her courage, intelligence, and perseverance in a time of extreme racial and gender discrimination. Who was Katherine Johnson? Katherine Johnson was born in 1918 in West Virginia, USA. From a very young age, she showed incredible talent in mathematics.

She finished high school at the age of 14 and graduated from college at 18 with degrees in mathematics and French. At that time, very few African-Americans, and even fewer women, could access higher education, especially in scientific fields. After working as a teacher, she joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became NASA, in 1953. She was part of a group of African-American women mathematicians called the "West Area Computers," who manually performed complex calculations for engineers. Her major achievements at NASA Katherine Johnson made major contributions to NASA’s space missions. One of her most famous achievements was calculating the flight trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space, in 1961. She also played a crucial role in the orbital mission of John Glenn in 1962. John Glenn personally asked for Katherine to check the flight calculations before his mission.

He said, "If she says they’re good, then I'm ready to go.".... »
