« What are the global impacts of Brexit on Britain's seas ? 1- Impact on immigration A major impact of Brexit on the seas is an increase of illegal immigration through small boats in the UK, specifically from France.

This can be explained by the UK’s withdrawal from the Dublin Regulation and other elements of the Common European Asylum System.

Indeed, previously to this the UK could ask other EU countries to take back people they could prove had passed through safe European countries before reaching the UK.

Moreover the UK does not have access to the Eurodac fingerprint database that facilitates tracking of migrants within the EU.

As a result, some people even testify that this makes immigration easier: To illustrate, in an interview by The Guardian, an immigrant argues that “Because of Brexit I believe that once I reach the UK I will be safe at last. No Dublin, no fingerprints any more”. In April 2022, in order to counter this phenomenon, the UK overhauled its asylum and immigration law.

In 2021, the UK also agreed to pay €63 million to strengthen France’s surveillance of the Channel and stop departures of small boats from its coasts and signed several agreements with Belgium to exchange information and share effective security technology.

However since these measures can be considered too short-termed oriented, the EU also considers including the UK in the New Pact on Migration and Asylum meant to be signed in 2024 by the members. 2- Maritime Trade After Brexit, the UK adopted new trade policies : Trade cooperation agreement ensuring tariff-free and quota-free trade in goods between the UK and the EU to protect the European Union's interests, ensuring fair competition, and continued cooperation in areas of mutual interest Additional customs checks and regulatory procedures affecting cross-border trade, causing delays at ports. Negotiations of new deals with several non-EU countries such as with Australia (A-UKFTA). Number of people detected arriving or heading to the United Kingdom in small boats Repartition of EEZs Britain Impact on Fishing around 3- After the 2016 Brexit, Britain has become an “Independent Coastal State”.

Consequently, Britain has had to face fishing.... »
