« Modern Slavery, Charisma, Sacha, Laura Definition of trafficking/modern slavery-today What is Modern slavery? Modern slavery is a form of human trafficking, where a person's freedom is restricted.

The individuals are forced to render labour or services, regardless of compensation.

Modern slavery is executed following 3 principles: -Act, recruitement, transport, transfer, Harbouring and receipt of persons ( a real network) -Means, threat or use of force, coercion, abduction, fraud, abuse of power, giving payments or benefits -purpose, exploitation including: Forced labour - Sexual slavery - Child labour - Bonded labour - Forced marriage - Descent-based slavery "Slavery," "forced labour," "bonded labour," "child labour," and "human trafficking" are commonly used terms.

For example in the forced labour, victims are made to work long hours in poor conditions and have their wages taken away. How does it work? With the low cost of transportation, the trading of slaves is a thriving global business where individuals are acquired through force, fraud, or other means in order to transport them to a location where they are exploited as slaves, or sold to those who exploit them as slaves. Where does it takes place? This happens both within national borders and across international borders, in both developed and developing countries. There are more slaves today than at any point in history, and the highest number of slaves is found in Asia. This forms of modern slavery happens when someone is married against their will and cannot leave.

Most child marriages can be considered slavery. As a case study we choose the testimony of Maria, a16 years-old girl.

Tanzania is one of the places on earth where forced marriage is most prevalent.

According to a Tanzanian demographic survey conducted in 2015 and 2016,two out of five girls are married before the age of 18 ,the prevalence rate of the practice is37% .In 2018 ,UNICEF ranks Tanzania as the 11 th country in the world with the highest number of child marriages .

Yet child marriage is a violation of human rights, especially for girls.

The director of plan international Tanzania, Mona Girgis, even said “Early marriage has a negative impact on girl’s lives .It deprives them not only of their rights, but also of their childhood.

A daughter married before the age of 18 is more likely to drop out of school ,become a mother , and die from complications during pregnancy and childbirth .Trapped in a life of poverty ,she is also more likely to face domestic and sexual violence “.
