Annabel Lee is the last poem written by Poe before his death in 1849. 2e diapo The topics of this poem are everlasting love & death of a young woman: the tone is tragic. We don’t really know who is the inspiration for this poem, it may be Poe’s wife Virginia Poe, who died at 25 y.o.

Poe never really recovered from her death. Annabel Lee is a poem composed of 6 stanzas in which there are from 6 to 8 lines. There is no visual symmetry. There is no rhyme pattern, but many rhymes in [i] are used. 1.

But we don’t know who is the narrator, his age, his name, his social condition.  We only know that Annabel & him were children.

“I was a child and she was a child.”  However, the name Annabel is used all over the poem and the repetitions of “my” show the poet’s obsession for the young lady.  We don’t have Annabel’s description, what she looks like.

But we know she’s from a good social condition thanks to the line: “So that her highborn kinsmen came”  The poet used expressions such as he told a fairy tale, readers don’t really when or where this story takes place: “It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by.... »
