Rod Laver.
Rod Laver, born in 1938, Australian tennis player, the only player to win the grand slam of tennis twice (as an amateur in 1962 and as a professional in 1969). Born in
Rockhampton, Queensland, Laver was raised in rural Queensland. Although he was small in stature for a tennis player, he developed effective topspin ground strokes
and became known for his shot making abilities. He was the Australian junior champion in 1957 and played on Australia's winning Davis Cup teams from 1959 to 1962.
In 1960 he won the men's singles title at the Australian championships, and in 1961 he won the men's singles title at Wimbledon.
In 1962 Laver became the first player since American Don Budge in 1938 to win the grand slam of tennis--that is, titles at Wimbledon and at the Australian, French,
and United States championships in the same year. Following this accomplishment, Laver turned professional. In 1968, with the advent of the open era, when
professionals were permitted to play in the major tournaments, Laver won the Wimbledon title for the third time. In 1969, perhaps his most successful year, he won 17
singles titles and earned his second grand slam. Laver participated in Davis Cup competition again in 1973 and led Australia to another victory, finishing his Davis Cup
career with a 16-4 win-loss record in singles matches and a 4-0 win-loss record in doubles matches.
