« GEORGES ORWELL Georges Orwell/Eric Arthur Blair (1903/1950) is a prominent English writer , famous for Homage to Catalonia (1938) , Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949) , his writing style is focused on dystopia , satire and real events .

There is an adjective which was named after him , an «Orwellian» situation meaning that the said situation is being destructive to a free and open society .

ILLUSTRATION This picture represents the fact that the pigs , and most particulary Napoleon , act more and more like humans throughout the story . REAL LIFE REPRESENTATIONS Symbolism as a whole is a center point in Orwell’s books , but most importantly in Animal Farm , because the entire book is a metaphorical representation of the UR SS throughout the russians revolutions: -Old Major/Karl Marx and Lénine, he s the founder of the ideology, animalism/communism -Mr.Jones=Capitalism flaws -Farm animals= the proletariat which is manipulated via propaganda -Napoleon=Staline , a leader who promises a utopia but who ends up creating a dystopia -Snowball=Trotsky , political opponent who ends up exiled -Squealer=Generals and media , keeps the population at bay via propaganda -dogs=KGB/secret police , silences opposition and oppresses the people -Frederick=Hitler/Nazi Germany , attacks the farm/UR SS and causes important damages and casualties to it . -Whymper= countries who sided with the UR SS for profit -Pilkington=Churchill , tries to contain the communist/animalist ideology -Moses=Religion , used by communism/animalism to keep the people/animals hopeful -Boxer=Stakhanovism , indoctrinated people who would sell out and denounce others -pigs in general represent the high-ranking officials who worked in the UR SS, they have privileges while being mostly idleQUOTES “ Napoleon is always right ”, this quote speaks of the authoritarian side of things and gives Napoleon complete authority The Seven Commandements , refer to communism because all the rules forbid animals from acting like humans, communism forbids the people from acting like capitalists and teaches ideas of us and them ( good vs evil ) “ four legs good, two legs bad ”, again this shows how one sided communist ideas are, we could replace it with “communists good, capitalists bad” BOOK COVER In this picture , the first thing we see are the colors of the UR SS flag , we can see a windmill in the center with light projected from behind, it symbolizes the goal and hopes of the animals, their hopes for a brighter future , explainig its position on the cover.

There are barbed wires all around the field and windmill, it represents the oppression and slave work put into it, the animals are locked in the “dream” of Napoleon as if they were in a prison, as a matter of fact Napoleon is at the bottom of the cover, all in red because it all came from him, he is the root of evil in this story POLITIC MEANING The book is an allegory of the Russian Revolution of 1917 , each important character represents a political figure at the time, it also shines a light on the secret Russian police , the KGB , through Napoleon’s 6 dogs .

Dictatorship is also a main theme in the story: -Napoleon gets elected because he is the only candidate -he gets rid of his political opponent -he silences the people who question his rule -he is the only one to get to decide what to do These themes synergizes nicely with the use of propaganda through the story, like “four legs good, two legs bad” a maxim which the sheep are made to repeat, propaganda songs/anthem, false documents all of these correlate with communism and an authoritarian regime The scene takes place on a farm in Willington,England owned by Mr.Jones .

His animals , unhappy with their condition decide to revolt led by a group of pigs named Squealer, Napoleon and Snowball with the help of Boxer , a horse, pigs, sheep, chickens and cows.

Afterwards , the animals takeover ,Napoleon indoctrinates 6 puppies which become his guards against foes like Frederic and keep the other animals in check Clover’s dream I woke up one day Mr jones was defeated we harvested the hay and like never we feasted I woke up today the widmill was gone our minds had gone astray our hopes came to none We saw pigs and men take a break we were as blind as sheep I thought I was awake but I was still asleep. »
