(Lua Mater) Roman An old goddess whowas called upon in war to destroy the enemy's weapons.At the end of a victorious battle, early Romansoldiers gathered the swords and shields of the enemyin a pile and dedicated those spoils to Lua.She also had the task of protecting the city ofRome, but people were not allowed to speak Lua'sname, and she is known as the "ineffable" or unnamablepatron goddess of that city and kingdom. Oneof Lua's responsibilities was to protect people fromplagues and to bring to enemies illnesses that mightdestroy them.Lua was sometimes known as the wife of Saturn,the ruler of a golden age said to have existed longbefore the beginning of Rome. In that role, she wasknown as Lua Saturni.
