examiner who had been looking at his notes, hit the windscreen giving him
a nice bump on his forehead.
She passed the test with the dry but objective comment "Your emergency
stop is excellent."

ELLE A PASSÉ SON PERMIS DE CONDUIRE AVEC BRIO.
Une dame d'Edimbourg était en train de passer son permis de conduire. A
un moment, l'examinateur lui dit de prendre le premier tournant à gauche.
A cet instant, un garçon traversa la route en courant juste devant la
voiture. Elle freina brusquement, et l'examinateur qui était en train de
regarder ses notes, heurta le pare-brise, ce qui lui occasionna une jolie
bosse sur le front.
Elle passa son test avec le commentaire caustique mais objectif: "Votre
freinage en cas d'urgence est excellent."

UNDERSTANDING HATRED.

Bradford, a northern England town, was the site of Britain's third race riot
last summer. It was also its worst: 281 policemen were injured and 36
troublemakers arrested.
The riot's immediate cause was a rumour that the National Front, a rightwing extremist group, planned to march through the city. It didn't, but
clashes between Asian and white youths turned into a fully-fledged battle.
The riots shocked the Bradfordians, but didn't surprise them. For years the
city had been sliding into a de facto apartheid, with Asian, Afro-Caribbean
and white communities living, working and studying separately.
On street corners, bored Asian and white youths say they have faced
naked racism every day but at interrace meetings nobody has had enough
courage to say "Hey, there are some lads in your community who are
troublemakers". Everyone is afraid of sounding racist. The question then is:
can multiracial society work and if so, how to make it work?

COMPRENDRE LA HAINE.
Bradford, une ville dans le nord de l'Angleterre, fut le site des troisièmes
émeutes raciales britanniques l'été dernier. C'était aussi les pires: 281
policiers furent blessés et 36 casseurs furent arrêtés.
La cause directe des émeutes était la rumeur que le Front National, un
groupe d'extrême droite, voulait marcher en cortège à travers la ville. Ils
ne le firent pas, mais les heurts entre jeunes asiatiques et blancs
tournèrent en une bataille rangée.
Les émeutes choquèrent les gens de Bradford, sans toutefois les
surprendre. Pendant des années, la ville a lentement connu une
ségrégation de fait, avec les communautés asiatique, afro-caraïbienne et
blanche qui vivent, travaillent et étudient séparément.
Aux coins des rues, des jeunes blasés asiatiques et blancs, disent qu'ils
doivent chaque jour affronter une forme directe de racisme; mais lors de
réunions interraciales personne n'avait le courage de dire "Dites, il y a des
gars dans votre communauté qui sont des bagarreurs". Chacun a peur de
paraître raciste. La question dès lors est: une société interraciale est-elle
viable, et si oui, comment la faire marcher?

name of the hotel and the street in which it was located.
As he promptly got lost, he couldn't find his way back and he spent the
rest of his three-day mini break looking not only for his lost lodgings but
also for the hat, coat, suitcase and money he had left in his room. But
without success. He went to the police but all he could tell them was that
he could see towers from his window. A police spokesman said: "He really
didn't give us a serious clue to go on."

DES VACANCES QUE LOUIS N'OUBLIERA PAS DE SI TÔT.
Louis Ross était aux anges dans sa chambre d'hôtel au 17ième étage
donnant sur Blackpool. Le temps étant superbe, il se dit que cela vaudrait
la peine d'explorer la ville. Malheureusement, il oublia de prendre note du
nom et de la rue de l'hôtel.
Comme il s'égara rapidement, il ne trouva pas le chemin de retour et il
passa le reste de son séjour de trois jours non seulement à chercher son
logement mais aussi son chapeau, son manteau, sa valise et son argent
qu'il avait laissé dans sa chambre. Mais sans succès. Il se rendit à la police

mais tout ce qu'il pouvait leur raconter, c'était qu'il pouvait voir des tours
de sa fenêtre. Un porte-parole de la police dit: "Il ne nous a pas vraiment
donné d'indications fiables."
