« Megacities evaluation Pablo Fuentes T3 PAI Megacities are humongous places with various infrastructure, people, and services.

In Nigeria, Lagos and Makoko are interesting cities; Lagos has a big population that is expanding outwards and Makoko is expanding on water.

Many problems follow those effects, in this synthesis, we will pose the question what are the difficulties that these two cities have and how the government is coping to fix those problems, by isolating the problems first before analysing the possible solutions they have found. In Lagos, problems are practically everywhere, the most common one is the sprawl of the people coming into the city and expanding everywhere, therefore complicating many services.

The horizontal expansion of the city leads to the complication of installing electricity and running water to every single home.

In 2050, it’s expected that 60% of the population will be younger than 25, showing the inefficiency of the spread of houses if they don’t grow upwards. Makoko has a different problem, even though the rising population impacts them, their problem is more environmentally linked.

The rising sea level has engulfed many roads and resorts as said in document C, and shown in document A.

Land reclamation for the new costal cities will apparently based on the Atlantic ocean which isn’t a good idea, taking into account that the more water rises, the more devastating effect it will have on the city and land they are living on.

Makoko is now living on water, this wouldn’t be a “big” problem if they have the proper technology to adapt to the water, but the fact that it is salt water and that the poles the houses are built on are made from wood makes them even more dangerous. All these problems have solutions that are somewhat fixable with the right technology, but Nigeria isn’t the most developed country there is, so their resources are limited,.... »
