Name of several denominationsin the HOLINESS and PENTECOSTAL tradition. Nowworldwide, they originated in the United States. The two main Churches of God, designated bythe location of their headquarters, are the Churchof God (Anderson, Indiana) and the Church ofGod (Cleveland, Tennessee). The former is aleading expression of the 19th-century Holinessmovement, which taught that Christians can, after conversion and believer's baptism, receivea second gift of the Holy Spirit called sanctifi cation, the ability to live a holy life. This churchwas founded in 1880 and follows congregationalorganization. The larger Cleveland, Tennessee, churchtraces its origins to 1886, though the name wasnot adopted until 1907. It has put more emphasisthan the other Church of God on Pentecostal-typegifts of the Holy Spirit as evidence of sanctifi cation.Speaking in tongues, divine healings, andecstatic behavior show that the Spirit is at workin a person and a congregation. Its organizationis comparable to that of METHODISM, with bishopsand superintendents. The Church of God ofProphecy, another Holiness/Pentecostal body, isan offshoot from it.The Church of God in Christ is a largely African-American denomination tracing its origin,as does Pentecostalism generally, to the famousAzusa Street revival of 1907 in Los Angeles. Italso embraces a combination of Holiness andPentecostal features, and it has spread aroundthe world.
