Chapter 1 — The Secret of the Old Clock
In the village of Clairvigne, there was a house everyone knew but no one
dared to approach: the House of Clocks.
Its owner, Master Horatus, was an old man with a silver beard who repaired
all kinds of watches and clocks.
In his workshop, more than twenty old
clocks chimed at different times—sometimes too early, sometimes early,
sometimes in complete silence.
Many children were afraid of this strange cacophony.
But it was not the case of Zoé.
Zoé was ten years old, she had brown hair with a long braid, and enough
energy to power the whole village.
She loved mysteries.
That evening, she was walking past the house on her home way from school
when she heard a tok… tok… tok… different from the others.
She pressed her ear to the window.
“Sounds like a clock is suffocating…”
Suddenly, the door opened.
Master Horatus looked at her.
“You have a good ear, Zoé.”
“I… uh… sorry! I didn’t want to disturb you”
“Come in, Zoé”
She swallowed her saliva and stepped inside.
The smell of old wood and heated metal submerged her.
In the center of the room stood an enormous golden clock, decorated with
tiny carved birds.
“That’s the one breathing strangely,” Zoé noted.
Horatus sighed.
“This clock is the Dawn Clock.
It doesn’t just tell time… It keeps the balance
between day and night.”
“The balance?”
“Yes.
If it stops… the sun might not rise again.”
Zoé turned pale.
“Then why is it making that noise?”
Horatus touched the clock gimbal.
