« Thomas Jefferson was born near the British colony of Virginia on April 13, 1743.

His parents, Peter Jefferson I (1708-1757) and Jane Randolph (1720-1776), were members of prominent families who had lived in the area for several generations. Thomas Jefferson was the first son of a family of ten children.

He lost his father at the age of 14. Thomas Jefferson was a man of science and multilingualism, he had a passion for many disciplines, from geometry and mathematics to mechanics and horticulture, and also proved to be an accomplished architect in the classical tradition. He was influenced by Christianity and Deism, and it was after his retirement that Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. His background before becoming president: From the age of nine, Jefferson studied away from home and lived with his tutor.

By the will of his father, he had a strong education.

{College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia} After college, Jefferson became a lawyer. By the age of 26, he was a member of the colonial legislature in Virginia.

Like George Washington, Jefferson spoke out against Britain's rule over the 13 North American colonies.

When the colonists decided to demand their independence from Britain, Jefferson was chosen to write a document explaining why the colonies should be free.

During the American Revolution, he represented Virginia in the Second Continental Congress. Jefferson then served as ambassador to France from 1785 to 1789 and became the first U.S.

Secretary of State under President George Washington.

Along with James Madison, he founded the Republican Democratic Party, which opposed the Federalist Party on domestic policy and challenged the government's position on the Sedition Acts. Jefferson became the third president of the United States in 1801 and retired in 1809.
