« Are you a victim or do you care about politics? Politics are one of the most important forces, deciding how we live our life.

Do we live in oppression? In peace? Is our country rich or is it poor? Are we protected? In this day and age being protected is one of the most important things, whether it be financially or in our relationships etc, but it seems as if we, as young people, our generation has forgotten the role politics play in this. But why have we forgotten? Why don’t we care anymore? First of all, it's not that we don’t care anymore but it’s just that most students don’t care about traditional politics anymore but rather like going out on the streets to fight for causes they find to be important. Even though the adults like to tell us and themselves it is because our generation has become lazy, I´m strongly convinced that this is not our problem here.

For me, the most problematic issue is the lack of political awareness amongst young students.

Schools do not invest enough time in showing their students the weight politics have.

They do not explain it to them and that is why most people are never and will never be able to form an actual interest in this field.

Everyone here in this room, who cares about our world and our future, even if it is just a tiny little bit, should try to put in the effort to solve this major problem in our education system and try to change it. But that is not the only system that has to change.

The simplest solution to get young people more involved with politics, is to change the politics themselves.

One of the rather big reasons why people abstain from voting is when the voter feels a lack of representation.

Most politicians orientate their promises towards the “grown-ups”.

Most of their objectives do not include the needs of our generation.

They do not make politics for us.

But they should. They should do us the favour and care about our future. Moreover, we cannot overlook that politicians are famous for lying, not keeping their promises, mitigating horrendous situations and in general just faking their empathy for their people.

So how can we have any faith left in them? I am calling out every single politician here right now; do not tell us that we are a lazy generation, while you can’t even keep what you promise your people.

Do not expect anything from us if we cannot expect anything from you. Of course, I could go on and on about why we “don’t care” but I feel like that oftentimes the question “Why should we care?” is being forgotten.

First of all, maybe even the most obvious reason, for most of us: politics decide our life.

Most aspects of our life, we can trace back to politics and our government.

Even the old Greeks have always known that building a democracy is the best way to structure a society.

If we did not have a modern system like ours, our society would probably be a mess right now.

We would be facing issues like wars, whether they “just” be civil, or maybe even world wars; we would not have a clear system to punish crime; and even less a functioning economy.

The world would, simply put, be in chaos. Politics give us structure. But they do not only decide how our life is going but also form us as a person.

Not only for the fact, whether one is more right-wing or left-wing oriented but also which problems of our society lie close to our hearts.

Individuals who start learning about politics at a young age can observe a change in their political views alongside with their personal development and their life experiences. And yes, it is true that sometimes the things that are happening make us feel mad, angry, hopeless, and even disappointed; but would you turn your back on your mum just because she made you feel mad once? The answer is no, of course. Additionally, studies have shown that non-political students are more afraid of speaking up at school than politically active individuals.

This is because politics or rather the interest in politics strengthen our personal and intellectual independence.

Having strong opinions means having the capacities to express them. Furthermore, we know that political engagement correlates to socioeconomic skills, including: self-control, curiosity, sociability, and knowledge about the financial industry.

To sum it up it just basically helps you understand how our society works.

So just do yourself a favor and engage; who knows? You might find that it can actually be very interesting and even entertaining if you decide to give it a chance. Right now, you might pose yourself the question “But what can I do to get interested in politics? What can I do to inform myself?”.

I personally would look at this question from, firstly, an individual standpoint and then from the standpoint as a member of a society, meaning.... »
