« A former Soviet Republic, Moldavia achieved a difficult independence in 1991.

Numerous separatist attempts have marked recent years: against Moldavian nationalists who demanded the reunification of the country with Rumania, the Slavs of the East of the Dnepr, primarily Russians and Ukrainians, declared their independence; the Gagaouzes did the same and a civil war ensued in 1992.

An agreement for the non-partition of the State was signed at the end of 1992 and Moldavia joined the CIS in 1993.

A new constitution has been proposed with more autonomy for the Gagauzi- and Russian-speakers of Transdniestrie but they refuse to yield over the sovereign status of their region.

In late 1995 they voted for a new independent constitution.. »
