Anthropologue russe, il fut directeur du Musée ethnographique impérial de Saint-Pétersbourg et professeur à l'Université de Vladivostock à partir de 1926, puis dans diverses universités chinoises. Il s'est attaché à la clarification de certains problèmes théoriques (définition du concept d'ethnie, notamment) et à celui du chamanisme. Il fit d'importantes recherches de terrain chez les Toungouses (Sibérie).
