On 26th October 1955 parliament voted in favour of Austria's permanent neutrality. But since January 1st, 1995, Austria has been a member of the European Union, which has thrown certain aspects of its neutrality into question. Its unemployment rate is amongst the lowest in Europe (6.3% in 1994). A large proportion of its trade is with Germany and the other countries of the European Union, but it also trades with the countries of the East, such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland.
