What are the influences of the Gilead society and how they have an impact on the woman’s lives? 1) The society in Gilead: how can we say that there are totalitarian and religious influences Characteristics.

1.

Gilead is a theocracy, a government where church and state are combined 2.

Hierarchy: The commander and The Wives (most privileged social class), The Eyes, The Guardians and The Angels (police other citizens).

The women are divided into the categories of Aunts (control train Handmaids), Marthas (servants), Handmaids (forced against their will to bear children for the elite society), Econowives (working class: can be married and have their own children), Unwoman (work in colonies, clean up pollution).

3.

the majority of the women in that society are sterile (due to pollution).

Handmaids are the only fertile women, and thus those in power force them into a life of slavery.

4.

Several religious ceremonies organized: The Ceremony, The Birthing Ceremony, Particicution, Salvaging, Prayvaganzas.

An oppressed state where people can’t say their opinion without getting killed: Particicution: execution, dismemberment of the opposant and make people watching (ex: doctors who practiced illegal abortion).

My God.

Who Art in the Kingdom of Heaven, which is within” chapter 30 2.

“The Marthas are not supposed to fraternized with us” chapter 2 “Go to the colonies, Rita said.

They have the choice.” Chapter 2 “The two Guardians salute us […].

They are supposed to show respect, because of the nature of our service” chapter 3 2/3.

“He could fake the tests, report me for cancer, for infertility, have me shipped off to the Colonies, with the Unwomen” chapter 11 3.

“he’s said a forbidden word.

Sterile.

There is no such thing as a sterile man any more, not officially.

There are only women who are fruitful and women who are barren, that’s the law” chapter 11 4.

“The three bodies hang there, even with the white sacks over their heads looking curiously stretched” chapter 42 “Now the official procession is approaching the stage […] : three women, one Aunt in front, two Salvagers in their black hoods and cloaks a pace behind her.” Chapter 42 Religion: 1.

Offred job as Handmaid is based on the biblical precedent of Rachel and Leah, where fertile servants can carry on adulterous relationships to allow infertile women like the Commander’s Wife to have families.

Women are only used for reproduction, when they are infertile, they are seen as 1: There are only women who are fruitful and women who are barren, that’s the law” 3.
