Singapura, breed of shorthaired cat from Singapore, once known as the "drain cat" for its habit of lurking in storm drains in the streets of Singapore. Two Americans
refined the Singapura in the 1970s after one of them discovered the breed while visiting Singapore on business and shipped four cats back to the United States.
The Singapura has a small- to medium-sized, muscular body with a slightly arched back. The heavy, tapered legs and body give the cat a stocky appearance. A short,
thick neck supports the round head, which has a medium to short muzzle, blunt nose, and well-developed chin. Large, almond-shaped eyes are slanted, and are hazel,
green, or yellow. Large, slightly pointed ears are wide at the base and set broadly on the head. The slender, medium to long tail has a blunt tip.
The Singapura's short, silky fur lays close to the body. The cat's muzzle, chin, chest, and stomach are the color of old ivory or unbleached muslin. The hair on the rest
of the body has dark brown bands separated by lighter-colored bands. The tip of the tail is dark, with the color extending up the tail to the rump.
The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) gave the Singapura full recognition in 1988. This cat is the official mascot of Singapore.
