Greek A female serpent born of theEarth. The goddess Hera sent Python to tormenther rival Leto, one of the many loves of Zeus, andthe mother of Apollo. The young Apollo slew thePython and bid the serpent to rot where it hadfallen. The spot where this encounter took placewas called Pytho, from the Greek word pytho, "torot." The name was later changed to Delphi. Thesite became the most venerated shrine in ancientGreece, sacred to Apollo. The Pythian Gameswere held every four years in honor of the ancientPython and were next in importance to the famousOlympic Games.
