Greek The daughter of Icarius andPeriboea; the wife of the hero Odysseus; mother ofTelemachus. During the long absence of Odysseusduring the Trojan War and his long voyage hometo Ithaca (see Odyssey) many men saw Penelope as awealthy and desirable widow. Suitors overwhelmed thepalace and Penelope was obliged to entertain them atgreat cost. Penelope held them off by claiming that shehad to finish weaving a shroud for her father-in-law,laertes, before she could choose a husband. She woveall day and secretly undid her work by night. Hersecret was disclosed by one of her servants, but Odysseusarrived in time to kill the suitors and reclaim hisbride. Penelope's name has come to personify wifelyvirtues such as patience and faithfulness.
