Description

In the foreground, an Adult Lion is standing on a rock, he is looking at the left of the picture, his mouth is open and we can see his sharp teeth.

In the background, there are 4 young lions, 3 of them seem to be looking at the same thing the Lion is looking at. The young lion that is on the right edge of the picture is looking at the person who is looking at the poster.

The rest of the background is shaded in a light brown color. There is one line of text above and seven lines of text under the lions. At the top of the poster is claimed: The Empire needs men! At the bottom of the rock is said: The Overseas States. And at the bottom of the picture is said: All answer the call. Helped by the young lions the old lion defies his Foes. Enlist Now. The Empire needs men is written in capital letters, so as Young Lions, old lion the oversea states and enlist now. But this last one is written in larger capital letters.

Analysis

This represents the symbolic British lion and four of it’s cubs that defy Germany in a 1914 patriotic cartoon. This propaganda poster clearly means that the British Empire needs more soldiers. British Empire, the "young lions" refer to the British colonies like Canada, Australia, etc., and the poster is urging young men to enlist in their respective armies to help those on the side of Great Britain to win the war. It's not really a propaganda poster but an enlistment poster. A true propaganda poster would use "facts" (true or false) to convince people to enlist or fight the war in some other way (manufacture weapons, uniforms, etc.). These overseas states are the Empire, made up of states such as Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Rhodesia, etc. These overseas states are the rock upon which the British people stand, the young lions are the men of these overseas states and they're being asked to defend their Empire by helping the old lion (Britain). We believe it's a recruitment poster for colonial men rather than men from the UK because it mentions the young lions. Come fight for your motherland, you are being relied upon to help save her and the Empire; that is the message. It is propaganda, real life lions don't behave like that, the leader of a pride chases off all the young males as soon as they're old enough to look after themselves. Young lions are more likely to attack the old lion in nature as that is how they become the leader of a pride themselves.
