John Stockton.
John Stockton, born in 1962, American professional basketball player, considered one of the greatest point guards in National Basketball Association (NBA) history.
Stockton played in the league from 1984 to 2003.
A gifted all-around player, Stockton was best known for his ball-handling and passing abilities. He retired after the 2002-03 season as the all-time NBA leader in assists
(15,806) and steals (3,265). During his 19 seasons in the league--all with the Utah Jazz, an NBA-record stint with one franchise--he also recorded 19,711 points.
Born in Spokane, Washington, Stockton graduated from Gonzaga University in 1984. At Gonzaga he established himself as one of the nation's best collegiate point
guards. The Jazz selected him in the first round of the 1984 NBA draft. He soon became the unselfish leader of a fast-paced Jazz offense, which often culminated with
forward Karl Malone scoring off a pass from Stockton. The Jazz made the playoffs every season Stockton and Malone played together--a collaboration that would last
until Stockton's retirement.
Stockton led the NBA in assists a record nine years in a row--every season from 1987-88 to 1995-96--and during this string he set the mark for the highest number of
assists per game over one season (14.5, 1989-90). Stockton also proved a tenacious defender, leading the NBA in steals for the 1988-89 and 1991-92 seasons.
In the 1990s Stockton was twice chosen to be a member of the United States Olympic basketball team, known as the Dream Team. The team won gold medals at the
1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, and the 1996 games in Atlanta, Georgia. A ten-time All-Star during his career, Stockton helped lead the Jazz to the NBA Finals
in 1997 and 1998, but the team lost both series to the Chicago Bulls.
