(Furiae) Greek and Roman The Romancommon name, now used almost exclusively, for agroup of Greek goddesses of vengence. The properGreek name for these goddesses is Erinyes. Theywere said by the poet Hesiod to be the daughtersof the Earth Mother, Gaia. They sprang fromthe blood of Uranus. In other accounts, they werethe daughters of Nyx or of Erebus. Their numbersvaried but there were generally thought to be threeFuries: Alecto (She Who Rests Not), Megaera (JealousOne), and Tisiphone (Avenger of Blood).The Roman Furies were merciless avengers ofany crimes committed, especially those that involvedbloodshed in a family or among kin. It is said thattheir punishment continued even after death anddescent into the Underworld.
