What do you notice about this last year and the progress of the Death Penalty?
1) We can notice a difference between the 90’s and last year.
During the 90’s the number of
executions was really high with a peak in 1999, with 98 executions.
In 2024, only 25 people
were executed.
There is a decrease of executions.

Look the “State by State” section on the right side of site and describe how many states have
the death penalty and how many do not.
2) Only 23 states do not have death penalty but 27 states still currently use it.
Therefore, there is
more states that use it than states that abolished it.

Look at the DPIC Fact Sheet…what do you learn from the charts?
3) We learn that the majority of the murder victims are white and the state have more chance to
condemned someone for death penalty if the victim is white than when the victim’s race is
black or Latino.
The people generally executed are also white with 55%, plus back people with
34% and Latino with 8%.
If race of defendants executed is mostly white, it’s because there are
more white people than black in those states, but 34% of executions is still high for the black
people’s total number (550), compared to white’s one (903).
4.
Analyze the “Innocence” chart.
Since 1973, how many people have been exonerated and
released from death row? Which state has had the most released?
4) After analyze of the chart, we can notice a total of 200 persons have been exonerated and
released from death row with an average of 4 wrongly convicted death-row prisoners since
1973.
Some States like Florida, Texas and Illinois have the most released (with 30 for Florida
since 1973).
5.
Analyze the “Murder Rates” chart.
Which region had the highest murder rate? What
connection can you make to the “Execution by Region” chart?
5) The States with the highest murder rates are Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Florida.

make a connection between those states and the region because they are all in the....
