The creator god in texts of Hindumythology known as the PURANAS. The Puranasidentify three families of deities according tofunction. The heads of these families are Brahmathe creator, VISHNU the preserver, and SIVA thedestroyer. The name Brahma is related to BRAHMAN,the word for the ultimate reality that, according tothe UPANISHADS and VEDANTA philosophy, underliesall appearances. Indeed, in some contexts the twowords have the very same form. So it is possiblethat modern readers have sometimes mistaken theone for the other.Several myths connect Brahma with the originof the world at the beginning of each cycleof generation and decay. For example, one wellknownimage depicts Brahma as seated on aLOTUS, which grows from the navel of Vishnuwhile the latter sleeps on the coiled world-serpentSesha. Myths also tell of Brahma grantingthe gift of eternal life. Despite such myths,Brahma is rarely worshipped.
