Betty Friedan is one of the founders of modern feminist movement in the united etats, from the years 60, And who succeeded the first American women's movement ( 1850-1920).This movement joined in particular in reaction to period on returning to the order moralist and traditional of the housewife, the model wife, returned in strength after the Second World war, in spite of headways(overhangs) obtained by the first women's movement (who the right to vote in 1920).

She(It) became known in particular in 1963 by her(its) try(essay) of her book : The mystified woman (The Feminine Mystique) who marked the launch of a movement to revalue the role of the women in the American company(society). This book was translated into French by the former(ancient) Minister of the rights of the Woman ( 1981-1986 ) Yvette Roudy.

Further to the success of this book, Betty Friedan was incited to base a women's movement inspired by the model of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ( NAACP), an association of fight(wrestling) against the segregation and the racial discriminations; action of which was in most cases political and juridical. It will be National Organization for Women (NOW), the national Organization for the women, which will play a primordial role on the American political and cultural stage during 1960s (One thousand nine hundred sixty ) 1970.
Throughout his action, Betty Friedan lauded a moderate feminism, aiming at a bigger gender equality and rights increased for the women, without positioning for all that in opposition to the men. That is why NOW is national organization for women. Organization for the women, and not the women. This moderation in its choices did not deprive for all that to Betty Friedan a definite but often difficult character (source f the regular conflicts within NOW and between feminist associations), and a taste for provoquantes formulae.

Betty Friedan was part of the American medium class and had accepted an university education. They could sometimes reproach heror not having taken into account enough the women of the working classes, and promoting a female model in décallage with wait of these last.
