Denial of the existence of any GOD orsupreme supernatural being. Atheists have longbeen around. In ancient India, China, and Greece afew philosophers said that the gods were only fi gmentsof human imagination, and everything thathappens in the universe could be given a naturalexplanation. Religionists have also accused oneanother of atheism. Christians have sometimessaid that Buddhists are atheists because they donot have a personal God as God is understoodby the Western religions, even though BUDDHISMhas most other features of what they would calla "real" religion. Atheism has probably grown inthe modern world with the rise of science, andthrough its association with powerful ideologieslike communism. But though many people may benonreligious for all intents and purposes, atheismas a deeply-felt personal commitment remains aminority stance.
