Ann Meyers.
Ann Meyers, born in 1955, American basketball player, one of the greatest female players. She was the first woman to sign a contract with a National Basketball
Association (NBA) team.
Meyers was born in San Diego, California. In high school she was an all-around athlete, lettering in seven sports. She chose to concentrate on basketball, however,
becoming the first high school player to be named to the United States national team. After graduating she attended the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA),
where she was one of the first women to receive a full athletic scholarship to a college or university. At UCLA Meyers was a four-time All-American, and while in college
she also played on the U.S. national teams that won the gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City and the silver medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in
Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Meyer's best year was 1978, when she led UCLA to the national basketball championship. That season she won the Broderick Award as the outstanding female college
basketball player of the year and the Honda Broderick Cup, given to the outstanding female college athlete of the year. After she graduated from UCLA in 1978, Meyers
signed a contract to try out for the Indiana Pacers, becoming the first woman to sign a contract with an NBA team. Some observers called the event a publicity stunt,
but it brought attention and credibility to women's basketball. Meyers did not make the Pacers' roster, but she later played with the New Jersey Gems of the Women's
Professional Basketball League. After retiring as a player, she worked as a television commentator. Meyers was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.
