(active mid-700s B.C.E.) a prophet ofancient Israel Amos is also a book in the BIBLEcontaining the sayings of this prophet. Amos wasa shepherd who lived in the town of Tekoa inJudea during the reigns of Uzziah, king of Judea(783–742 B.C.E.), and Jeroboam II, king of Israel(786–746 B.C.E.). He claims to have receivedmessages from the GOD YHWH ("the Lord") thatforetold the destruction of Israel's neighbors:Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Moab, and theAmmonites. They also foretold the destructionof Judah. But most of the messages were aboutthe coming destruction of Israel. At the time thatprobably seemed unlikely. The Israelites were worshipping YHWH withlavish SACRIFICES and offerings. According to Amos, however, God rejected these. He also faulted Israelfor its failure to repent. The book is not veryspecifi c about what Israel has done wrong. Someverses hint that Israel had offended YHWH byworshipping other gods. A few verses explicitlycondemn Israel for social injustices. They condemnrich Israelites for taking advantage of and cheatingthe poor. The book of Amos is relatively short; it containsnine chapters. It belongs to the portion of theHebrew Scriptures (see SCRIPTURES, HEBREW) knownas "The Twelve," which Christians call "the minorprophets." It mostly prophesies destruction, butthe fi nal few verses promise that after the destruction,YHWH will restore his people.
