Suharto - biography. President of Indonesia Birth June 8, 1921 Death January 27, 2008 Place of Kemesu, Indonesia Birth Official Title President Term 1968-1998 Known for Promoting economic development and closer relations with Western nations, but ruling through an autocratic and corrupt regime that put economic resources under the control of family members and close associates Milestones 1940 Joined the Dutch colonial army 1942 Cooperated with Japanese occupation forces during World War II, believing that an alliance with Japan offered the best chance for future Indonesian independence 1945 Joined the newly established Indonesian army to fight against the Dutch colonial forces, which returned to Indonesia after Japan lost the war 1949 Planned and led a surprise raid that drove Dutch forces from Yogyakarta 1963 Took control of the army's strategic command, a security force designed to respond to national emergencies 1965 Suppressed a rebellion against President Sukarno's government by Communist and other leftist forces, after which he gradually surpassed Sukarno in executive power 1967 Became acting president, and was formally appointed president by the parliament the following year 1975 Ordered an invasion of East Timor, which Indonesia later annexed 1980s Expanded Indonesia's role in regional politics but faced increasing domestic unrest 1998 Resigned from office after his unpopular cabinet appointments incited rioting Did You Suharto was honored by the United Nations and the Population Institute in the 1980s for Indonesia's successful campaign to slow Know population growth.
