Margaret Mead - Biography. American anthropologist, author, and teacher Birth December 16, 1901 Death November 15, 1978 Place of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Birth Known for Studying gender roles and child development in non-European societies, particularly Samoa Pioneering anthropological techniques that include the use of photography and videotape Broadening awareness of the field of cultural anthropology, and pioneering the field of applied anthropology Career 1925-1926 Undertook her first field expedition to Samoa 1926-1978 Worked for the American Museum of Natural History in New York, first as assistant curator of ethnology (1926-1942), and subsequently as associate curator (1942-1964), curator (1964-1969), and curator emeritus (1969-1978) 1928 Published Coming of Age in Samoa, an enormously and enduringly popular book based on her first field expedition 1920s-1930s, 1950s-1970s Participated in field expeditions to the Admiralty Islands, New Guinea, and Bali 1942-1945 Served as executive secretary of the committee on food habits for the National Research Council 1948-1950 Worked as director of research in contemporary cultures at Columbia University 1954-1978 Taught at Columbia University as adjunct professor of anthropology 1956-1957 Served as president of the World Federation for Mental Health 1968-1970 Was appointed professor of anthropology and head of the social science department at Fordham University, Lincoln Center campus, New York Did You Mead and her husband, British anthropologist Gregory Bateson, took about 25,000 photographs during their visit to Bali. Know Mead was a contributing editor at Redbook, a popular women's magazine, from 1961 until her death. The recipient of many honors and awards, Mead received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1979. Mead studied with German-American anthropologist Franz Boas during her senior year at Barnard, and decided to become an anthropologist after completing Boas's course.
